How to Make the Perfect Bed: A Step-by-Step Guide

- Hotel Sheets Direct Brand Team

Woman learning how to make the perfect bed

Every self-help guide shares at least one thing in common: Make your bed every morning (that and stretching, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here). The science behind it is unclear to me, but there really is something magical about it. Making my bed each morning makes me feel more productive, more organized, and overall, more on top of things

But, we do have to be honest with ourselves - sometimes staring down the task of creating a perfectly made bed can be a bit of a pain. So much so that facing it down every day can seem a little daunting.

So how do we counter these bed making blues while learning how to make the perfect bed

A little something we here at Hotel Sheets Direct call a consistent routine. To put it simply, having a consistent way to make your bed helps you form better habits. Moreover, having a comfy, made bed to look forward to can make us a little more relaxed once we climb into it!

Worried your bed might be lacking in the comfort department? No worries, we’ve got you covered. We’re going to go over getting the right bamboo sheets, the fluffiest pillows, and finally, the best routine that teaches you how to make the perfect bed in minutes. That’s right, minutes

Bed Making 101: Getting the Right Sheets

Like every bed has a box spring foundation, learning how to make the perfect bed starts with a sheet foundation. Those of us who have been surviving without a fitted sheet, I get it - they’re annoying to put on, and even more annoying to fold up. But the reality is, the key to a nice, neat bed starts with a nice, neat fitted sheet

If you don’t know where to start, my personal suggestion is this Hotel Sheets Direct bamboo sheets set. “Why bamboo sheets?” I hear you asking. I’ll tell you why - bamboo bed sheets are sustainable, strong, and oh-so-soft. These sheets in particular come in every size, have multiple colors to perfect your bed style, they’re stain and tear resistant, and don’t pill like regular sheets.

On top of all of that, they come with 2 pillow cases to match your bed up perfectly. The best way to make a hotel-style bed is with hotel-style sheets, so this is obviously the best place to start.

Now that we’ve got our sheet foundation, it’s time to move on to the second most important part in learning how to make the perfect bed…finding the perfect pillows.

Bed Making 102: Pillow-to-Person Ratio

In my humble opinion, there is no exact maximum of pillows one can have (though I do feel there is an exact minimum). If you want 10 pillows on your bed, I say go for it - just make sure those pillows are quality. No sense spending cash on pillows that don’t give you the support you know you deserve.

Let's start first with the best type of pillows to accentuate your bed. For a high quality cushion that looks and feels like a million bucks, I suggest this bamboo memory foam pillow. It doesn’t break the bank (but looks like it should), it comes in 3 different size options, it provides the perfect amount of support for back, stomach, and side sleepers, and it molds to your shape.

You’ll also need a pillowcase set that both matches your sheets and keeps you cool - for that, I recommend this bamboo pillowcase set. Those of us who get a little sweaty (myself included) will be relieved by the cooling bamboo liner that stays fresh and keeps you comfy and cool, all through the night.

Alright, now that we’ve got our pillows, it’s time to talk about the pillow ratio. You can’t know how to make the perfect bed without knowing the minimum amount of pillows! Luckily for you, I’ve created this handy table that shows you just how many pillows you’ll need to make the bed of your aesthetic dreams:

# Of People

# Of Standard Pillows

# Of Accent Pillows

Why Do I Need So Many Pillows?

This is an excellent question, and I’ll tell you why: because pillows, whether we like it or not, go flat from overuse. Even the best bamboo memory foam pillows don’t last forever. That’s why it’s best to have several options to switch around with, especially if you’re sharing a bed with others.

Accent pillows are the answer you’re looking for regarding how to make your bed look luxurious. Trust me on this, a square or circular accent pillow on a bed completely changes the look. Pick your favorite pattern, and toss it on once your bed is made, and VIOLA! You’re living in the lap of luxury!

Bed Making 103: Layered Bedding

The final ingredient to our new, perfectly made bed is to have comfy-yet-chic layered bedding. This can be a little confusing, so I’ve laid it out in an easy guide to follow from bottom to top:

  • Layer 1: A mattress protector. Did you know that mattresses almost double their weight after 10 years from pollen, dust, and dirt? Gross. A mattress protector keeps your mattress clean and pristine, so don’t skip this step!
  • Layer 2: A bed skirt. I know what you’re thinking - are bed skirts outdated?” NO! Bed skirts are an amazing yet overlooked invention that allows us to make our beds look luxurious, while hiding all of the storage space under the bed. It’s a win-win.
  • Layer 3: A flat sheet. Linens (especially ours) are essential for breathability, and despite adding another layer, make you cooler throughout the night.
  • Layer 4: A quilt. This is optional, but perfect for the colder seasons. They’re fashionable and functional, adding warmth and textural style to your bed. You can go solid to match, or choose a bolder color to make your quilt a standout piece on your bed.
  • Layer 5: A comforter & duvet cover. Comforters have long since settled the argument of what the best blanket is, and no guide on how to make the perfect bed is complete without it. I recommend getting a down or down alternative comforter, and finding a duvet cover and sham set that really bring out your own personal style!
  • Layer 6: A throw or weighted blanket. Want to know how to make a bed look more comfortable? A weighted blanket is how. This is truly the PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE, if I do say so myself. The accent of all accents - a weighted blanket is soft, comforting, and makes any bed look expertly designed.

This premium weighted throw blanket and duvet cover from Quility is, in my opinion, the top-notch choice. It looks great, you can choose your preferred weight, and you can toss it anywhere to create a great accent piece.

How to Make The Perfect Bed in 8 Steps

Time to get serious. For those of us looking to take their bed up a notch, this is the way to do it. Let’s start, again, from the bottom:

  • Step 1: Put On Your Mattress Protector

You can’t start the bed making process without keeping your mattress safe first. This is an essential step for those wanting to get the most out of their mattress, which I assume (and hope) is everyone reading this article.

  • Step 2: Lengthen/Shorten Your Bed Skirt

Do you need a bed skirt to make a perfectly made bed? No. But it looks so elegant, and hides the abysmal underside of the bed so well, I had to include it. Make sure to lengthen or shorten your bed skirt until it is the perfect length (just barely touching or hovering above the floor).

  • Step 3: Put On Your Fitted Sheet

Everyone’s least favorite step, I know. But here’s a tip: Get fitted sheets with deep pockets. This makes the entire process so much easier. Here’s another tip: Put on the hardest corners first - that’s just a personal preference of mine that makes my life a little easier.

  • Step 4: Put Your Flat Sheet On Face Down

This seems like an odd choice, but doing this actually allows the patterned or more colorful side of your sheet to be seen more easily when you fold back your covers. Neat, right?

  • Step 5: Put On Your Quilt

Add your chosen quilt and tuck the edges under the mattress with your flat bamboo sheet, and fold it over with your flat sheet as well. If it’s super hot outside, you can keep your quilt in storage, or use it instead of a big fluffy comforter. Your choice!

  • Step 6: Layer On & Fold Your Comforter

What you’ll want to do is fold your comforter or bamboo duvet cover hotdog style and place it about 3/4ths of the way down your bed. This gives you (or your guests) the option to use it or nix it if it’s too hot. If it’s super cold out, you can always unfold it and make it like a usual bed!

  • Step 7: Add Your Pillows

Standard pillows first, y’all! Place your bamboo memory foam pillows stacked 2 at a time, evenly spaced. After that, grab your accent pillows and place them neatly in the center of your standard pillows, or off to the side - whatever you think looks best.

  • Step 8: Throw On the Throw Blanket

This is the easiest step - throw on your weighted throw blanket! This can be messy or neatly placed, it’s up to you and how you want your bed to look. Sometimes a little touch of mess can be just what a bed needs to look luxurious.

…And you’re all done! Enjoy your beautiful new bed!
